What is Carrier Oil?

carrier oil is a plant-derived oil used to dilute and “carry” essential oils and concentrated aroma oils onto the skin. Because essential oils are highly concentrated, many should be diluted before topical application. A carrier oil provides a convenient base that helps distribute the concentrated oil evenly across the skin.

Unlike essential oils, carrier oils are non-volatile, meaning they do not quickly evaporate. They are generally produced from the fatty portions of plants, including seeds, nuts, kernels, and fruits. Carrier oils are composed primarily of fatty acids and other naturally occurring lipids, while essential oils contain concentrated volatile aromatic compounds.

Common carrier oils include jojoba oil, sweet almond oil, grapeseed oil, avocado oil, apricot kernel oil, sunflower oil, coconut oil, argan oil, rosehip oil, and olive oil.
