History of Essential Oils

Essential oils have been used for thousands of years and are among the oldest aromatic products known to humanity. Ancient civilizations in Egypt, India, China, Greece, and Rome valued aromatic plants for their fragrance, cultural significance, and traditional wellness practices. Early preparations were often made by infusing flowers, herbs, woods, and resins into oils or fats. The development of distillation techniques around the first millennium greatly improved the ability to extract concentrated plant essences. Persian and Arab scholars refined steam distillation methods, which later spread throughout Europe. By the Middle Ages and Renaissance, essential oils were widely used in perfumery, botanical studies, and traditional herbal practices. As scientific knowledge advanced during the 18th and 19th centuries, the production and study of essential oils became more standardized. Improved extraction methods allowed for greater purity and consistency, while growing international trade expanded access to aromatic plants from around the world. Today, essential oils are extracted from a wide variety of flowers, leaves, roots, fruits, seeds, woods, and resins. Popular oils include lavender, peppermint, eucalyptus, tea tree, lemon, and frankincense. Essential oils are commonly used in aromatherapy, personal care products, home fragrance applications, massage, and wellness routines, continuing a tradition that spans thousands of years.
