History of Fine Oils

The use of fine oils dates back thousands of years to ancient civilizations such as Egypt, Mesopotamia, India, and China. Egyptians were among the first to create aromatic oils by infusing flowers, herbs, and resins into oils for religious ceremonies, cosmetics, and personal fragrance. Ancient Greeks and Romans expanded these practices, using scented oils for bathing, massage, and medicine. During the Middle Ages, knowledge of distillation improved through Arab scholars, allowing the extraction of more concentrated aromatic oils from plants. By the Renaissance, perfumery became an art form in Europe, particularly in Italy and France. The city of Grasse in southern France emerged as a center of fine fragrance production, a reputation it still holds today. In the 19th and 20th centuries, advances in chemistry made it possible to create both natural and synthetic fragrance ingredients, greatly expanding the variety and affordability of scented oils. Today, fine oils are used in perfumery, aromatherapy, personal care products, home fragrance, and spiritual practices. Modern fine oils blend traditional botanical ingredients with contemporary fragrance science, continuing a rich history that spans more than 5,000 years.
